Some Perspectives

Some analysts welcomed the measures that Bush and the US Federal Reserve announced to prevent the US mortgage crisis from aggravating. “Something other than lower interest rates is needed to fix the subprime crisis and a freeze on mortgage interest payments is a big step in the right direction, if it works,” said Cary Leahey, Managing Director of Decision Economics.

However, some others argued that although the new regulations that the Federal Reserve announced would reduce the rate of foreclosures in the future, the measures were too late to help existing borrowers facing problems...

There was growing concern about the slowdown in the US economy. Between October 2007 and December 2007, the US economy had grown by a mere 0.6 percent (annualized) compared to 4.9 percent in the preceding three months.
